Our Mission
Our mission is to deepen one's understanding of how their purchasing decisions impact the environment in order to better inform the consciousness and consumption habits of the individual so as to promote change in consumption that leads to net zero carbon impact.
A blu-nit is an “at a glance” unit of measurement to better inform the consumer of just how much a product has impacted the environment in relation to the green house gases it cost to produce that product.
Much like in the 1970s when the FDA began requiring nutrition labels on all food packaging, our goal is to bring the “environmental cost” of a product to the individual consumer in a simplified, relatable way.
Our Goal:
Much like nutritional stats are found on the back of the food we consume, our goal is to have the Blu-nit logo and metric used on consumer packaging to better inform one’s purchase making decision.
What Does Blu-nit represent?
The Blu-nit adds up all the carbon (CO2) and carbon equivalents (CO2eq) emitted by the creation of a product, and then divides that number by how much carbon 1 adult tree can absorb in 1 day. Therefore the number of Blu-nits it requires to produce a product tells you how many trees are required to absorb that product’s global warming potential (GWP) in 1 day, or conversely, how many days it would take 1 adult tree to absorb the amount of carbon equivalent to the global warming potential of all the Green house gases emitted.
Why a tree?
The tree is relatable. The tree is universal. The tree is a symbol known in every corner of the globe. Much like one does not need a degree in nutrition to understand the basic function of a calorie, one does not need a degree in environmental science to understand the basic function of a tree.
It is not our aspiration to tell people what they should or should not buy – we simply want to inform. In the era of being “woke”, and with information and data so easily tracked and transferred, we believe now is the time to introduce the Blu-nit to the world, and deepen our understanding of how the products we buy impact the environment.
As the ®Blu-nit organization builds partnerships with the various entities that produce, transport, process, and sell to the consumer, we will be able to bring more information and transparency to you in regards to how long it will take the environment to rebound from the creation of the product that you seek to purchase.
